The Penrhyn quarry, located on the edge of Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, has been commercially producing slate since the late 1700s. These slates roof many of the world's most prestigious buildings including Buckingham Palace in London and St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin.
One of the unique characteristics of Penrhyn slate is its ability to produce large format slates.
In the old days, the quarry strived to produce the largest slate possible from the slate rock, and many historical heritage jobs have slates that are 24", 26" or even 30" plus. In heritage jobs, where the architect is looking to replicate the exact size from the past, the quarry can still produce these large format sizes.
